10.19.10 - The Crucible: Quote

“He was a widower with no interest in children…” (pg. 1234)

From the introduction of the story, it seems as if the Reverend was not a likable character. I wonder if his attitude will change further on in the story. He even has a daughter who’s only 10, so why doesn’t he treat her like a normal child like how everyone else does. It must have been horrible to be disciplined at such a young age.

Well, looking at the quote you chose, Parris doesn't treat Betty like a normal child like everyone else does because he's not interested in children at all. If you're not interested in something, you will most likely pay little attention to whatever you're not interested in. Furthermore, Parris is a widower so Betty doesn't have anyone else to take care of her.
