Proctor makes a reference from the Roman leader who condemned Jesus to be crucified. So in fact, he compares Hale to Pilate. Hale was being irrational against Elizabeth and knew his opinion to take her away even though he had no proof she was a witch. Also, this would be an allusion.

Great pick for a quote! There are so many allusions in this play, I think in part, because this is such a religious society. They spend so much of their time studying from the Bible, that it would seem reasonable they would use Biblical references to make a point. It's Miller who is actually writing this, however, and I think he does an excellent job using Biblical allusions to make poignant points such as this one. So be on the lookout for more!
